Cormorant fishing

Cormorant fishing,a method in which a fisherman uses cormorant to catch fish, has taken place for 1300 years. In the past, the person in power at the time protected the fishing. It is said that there were 21 cormorant masters and they received various rights from the river.Since the Meiji Restoration(1867),specila protection has declined and many people have given up the craft.

In 1890,cormarant fishing is handed down hereditarily.and there are six fishing masters in the Nagara area. Their formal name is "Cormorant Fishing Masters of the Board of Ceremonies of the Imperial Household Agency", and 122 tools they use for fishing are Important Tangible Folk Custom Culture Assets of the Nation.

Cormorant fishing on the Nagara river is designated as an Important Intangible Culture Asset of Gifu City.
